By Aaron Humes: A devastating accident on Sunday morning has rocked the community of Maskall, Belize District, leaving an 18-year-old young man dead and a family in mourning.
According to police reports, Triston Ortiz was a passenger in a Toyota Hilux driven by 34-year-old Gilbert Graham. The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. when the vehicle reportedly lost control while approaching the Old Belize River Bridge. The truck collided with the bridge railing, causing it to plunge approximately 20 feet into the riverbank below.
Police staff officer ASP Stacy Smith provided details on the incident: “At around 5:30 a.m. on June 22, officers responded to reports of the fatal crash. Upon arrival, we found Ortiz with visible injuries and immediately transported him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.”
Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle was traveling toward the bridge when it crashed into the railing, resulting in the tragic fall. Gilbert Graham has been detained by authorities, and a urine sample has been collected from him for further analysis.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. More updates will be provided as the probe progresses.
