By Breaking Belize News Staff: On the eve of his 31st birthday, Kyle Aswan Zetina, 30, was sentenced to three life sentences by Justice Candace Nanton for the gruesome 2019 murders of Excelsior High School Vice Principal Alarice Andrewin, 44, and her two friends—Vidal Antonio Yuman, 39, and Maria Lucas, 19, a Guatemalan national.
The murders took place at Andrewin’s home at Mile 10½ on the George Price Highway on June 3, 2019. The victims were bound and executed, with Andrewin shot twice in the head and the others once each. Zetina and his alleged accomplice, Shawn Flores, fled in Andrewin’s vehicle. Flores was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
After a lengthy mitigation hearing on Friday, Justice Nanton ruled that Zetina will only become eligible for parole after serving 37 years behind bars. The sentence is backdated to June 7, 2019, when he was first remanded.
Despite his conviction earlier this year, Zetina maintained his innocence in court today. In his final words before sentencing, he said,
“I am sorry for the death of the family members, but I cannot say I am sorry about doing it because I didn’t do it.”
Justice Nanton, however, noted his lack of remorse, his continued denial of guilt, and the heinous nature of the crime in deciding on the sentence.
Aggravating and Mitigating Factors
In delivering the sentence, Justice Nanton highlighted several aggravating factors, including:
Although Zetina had no previous violent offenses, his 2011 conviction for handling stolen goods, and two prison infractions for marijuana possession were considered.
On the other hand, mitigating factors included:
Justice Nanton concluded that while there was some potential for rehabilitation, Zetina’s refusal to accept responsibility weighed heavily against him. The court settled on a starting point of 38 years, added 2 years for aggravating factors, then subtracted 3 years for mitigation, arriving at the final minimum parole term of 37 years.
\According to trial evidence, Zetina and an accomplice waited outside Andrewin’s home and ambushed her and her friends. After binding the three victims with orange electrical cords, they searched the home, stole valuables, and executed all three before escaping in Andrewin’s Nissan Rogue.
Police discovered the bodies after a co-worker raised concern over Andrewin’s absence from school. Swabs collected from Zetina placed him at the scene.
Zetina was represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez. Co-accused Shawn Flores was acquitted after the judge found no admissible evidence linking him to the murders.
Zetina is now serving one of the harshest sentences handed down for murder in recent Belizean history.
