Kenneth ‘Big Tom’ Flowers makes emotional appeal for change, respect among ‘Ghetto Youths’ after recent shooting

By Aaron Humes: As he will be the first to tell you, Kenneth “Big Tom” Flowers is not perfect.

But this morning, he showed exceptional vulnerability in a 12-minute social media live video appealing for change following a shooting incident in his native St Martin de Porres on Friday afternoon.

Flowers mentioned that the incident happened near a yard of someone known to him who would not have tolerated that kind of thing, were he still alive. He went on to note that he has been trying to live a crime-free life and spread the message that all the killing is not solving the many problems affecting youth on Southside Belize City, and that they would be better served working together than at cross purposes.

Traces of the old gangster still lurked, as when he threatened to find whoever was behind the incident and eliminate them himself. But he was near tears at other points as he pleaded for the killing to stop and reflected that if someone wanted to go out shooting to resolve a situation, they would be better served looking at themselves in the mirror.

It remains to be seen whether this latest appeal will cool down hot heads and prevent another State of Emergency or similar proclamation from being issued.
