By Zoila Palma: On Tuesday, July 1st, the United States Embassy in Belize commemorated the 249th anniversary of American Independence with a vibrant celebration held on the Embassy’s beautifully landscaped grounds in Belmopan.

Breaking Belize News was on-site to cover the event, which began with a ceremonial entrance by the U.S. Marine Security Guards, who proudly presented the American flag.

Their formal presentation added a dignified military tradition to the festivities. This was followed by the singing of both the Belizean and American national anthems.

Chargé d’Affaires David Hodge served as host for the evening, welcoming a distinguished gathering of guests, including the Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceño, and the Governor General Froyla Tzalam.

In his remarks, Hodge emphasized the strong and enduring partnership between the United States and Belize, highlighting the deep ties of friendship and cooperation that connect the two nations.

Governor General Tzalam, speaking on behalf of the people of Belize, expressed gratitude for the continued support from the U.S. government and extended warm wishes for a Happy Independence Day.

Guests enjoyed a variety of delicious foods, including a patriotic treat provided by Southwest Airlines—red, white, and blue cupcakes that added a sweet, festive touch to the evening.

Among those in attendance was Belizean-American Dr. Paul Whisnant, founder of International Servants. A long-time missionary in Belize since 1990, Dr. Whisnant has also served as a Citizen Liaison for the U.S. Embassy since 1998 and was named Honorary Humanitarian Ambassador in 2017.

His decades of humanitarian service have left a significant mark on communities across the country.

Through his organization, Dr. Whisnant has hosted hundreds of volunteer doctors from the United States to provide free medical care throughout southern Belize, especially in remote Mayan villages. His Feed-A-Child program continues to nourish thousands of Belizean children daily, demonstrating a tangible commitment to improving lives.

The Independence Day celebration at the U.S. Embassy was a powerful reflection of the close and dynamic relationship between the United States and Belize—a relationship built on shared values, mutual respect, and a vision of progress and partnership.
