By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH) says that it is aware an incident involving the intentional defacing of the Haulover Bridge by the removal and theft of a portion of the aluminum railing separating vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
“From our assessment, it is evident that the rail was physically cut and removed.
The Ministry is disappointed at such a selfish act of blatant vandalism. It must stop,” MIDH noted.
Approximately 4km of guardrails along the Coastal Plain Highway have been damaged, most likely due to reckless driving, within just one year of the highway’s completion.
“Thankfully, no lives appear to have been lost, nor have any accidents or specific causes of the damage been ascertained. However, the Government and people of Belize now bear the BZ$1.3 million cost to repair.
We also take this opportunity to highlight the horrendous quantity of litter that is collected by the MIDH teams from the roadsides on a daily basis! How can fellow Belizeans continue with this nastiness,” MIDH expressed.
The Ministry is seeking the public’s assistance to report any suspicious activity including anyone tampering with any bridge structure or road safety infrastructure (such as guardrails, signs, or safety railings), please report it immediately.
Please take more pride in our national infrastructure; these assets are your assets.
To report an incident, contact the Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing at 828-5220.
