By BBN Staff: The Belize Audubon Society, in honor of exemplary conservation efforts in Belize, has awarded Roni Martinez with the prestigious James A. Waight Conservation Award.

The award, named after the Society’s first president, is given annually on the anniversary of his birthday, February 16th, to organizations or individuals in recognition of outstanding work in the protection and enhancement of Belize’s environment.

The Audubon Society presented Martinez with the award at a ceremony held last Friday at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza. Martinez, who was nominated for the award by both the Caves Branch Lodge and the San Pedro Sun, is a botanist, birder, wildlife photographer, trainer, teacher, advocate of sustainable tourism, and researcher.

Martinez, who is a Belizean bird guide by profession, is also one of two founders of Scarlet Six Bio-monitoring Team (now known as Belize Bird Conservancy), which was formed as an effort to protect Belize’s Scarlet Macaw from the illegal pet trade.

In accepting the award Martinez said: “We are all responsible for each other and for our environment if we don’t individually do it then who will? If we don’t protect the environment and train the younger generation to do so, then who will?”

He went on to encourage all conservationists in their respective fields to ensure that their efforts can be used as inspiration for others to make a difference.

Scotiabank closing two branches in Belize https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2018/02/19/scotiabank-closing-two-branches-in-belize/ https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2018/02/19/scotiabank-closing-two-branches-in-belize/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 02:05:27 +0000 http://www.breakingbelizenews.com/?p=35924 […]]]> Posted: Monday, February 19, 2018. 7:54 p.m. CST.

By BBN Staff:Today, Scotiabank Belize announced that it will be closing two of its district branches later this year.

Scotiabank said that it would close Spanish Lookout Branch effective April 20, 2018 and its Placencia Branch effective June 22, 2018. The bank explained that the closure came after reviewing its operations and assessing the needs of their customers, while looking at maximizing the efficiency of its operations.

We are also committed to supporting our employees through this transition while staying true to our principles of treating employees, fairly, equitably and with respect.,” the bank added.

The Spanish Lookout Branch has been robbed several times, though the bank did not say whether the robberies had any influence on its closure.

In November 2014 Scotiabank head quarters in Canada announced a plan to save CAN$120 million by shutting down or shrinking 120 branches, 35 of which were in the Caribbean. At that time Belizean branches were spared, although the bank instituted a change to the Spanish Lookout Branch, by shortening its business hours.

In some of these (Caribbean) countries, we are just overbranched and we have to size it to the economic realities of these economies,” said Scotiabank Chief executive officer, Brian Porter.

DOE and BTB introduce new requirements for hoteliers https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2018/02/19/doe-and-btb-introduce-new-requirements-for-hoteliers/ https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2018/02/19/doe-and-btb-introduce-new-requirements-for-hoteliers/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 01:44:06 +0000 http://www.breakingbelizenews.com/?p=35922 […]]]> Posted: Monday, February 19, 2018. 7:34 p.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: The Department of the Environment (DOE) and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) have introduced a new Environmental Checklist to facilitate the environmental screening process of hotels to ensure that new and existing facilities are compliant with relevant environmental laws.

According to the BTB, this is a pre-requisite for the renewal of hotel licenses. The checklist includes a standardized fee and list of requirements, which are mandatory for the processing of an application for environmental clearance. A copy of the checklist can be found at: http://www.doe.gov.bz/index.php/services/checklists/send/37-checklists-for- developers/654-hotelschecklist-final-2017

The DOE encourages owners of existing hotels that have not yet obtained environmental clearance to complete the environmental checklist and submit the necessary information and proof of payment to the DOE for processing. As part of the process, the DOE is required to conduct a site inspection once all required documentation is submitted and reviewed.

Hotel owners are encouraged to contact the DOE at 822-2819 or 828-4845, or at eiaunit@environment.gov.bz with any queries regarding the requirements or process.
