Conservation organizations to promote sustainable fishing

Aaron Humes: Seafood is a major source of income for Belizeans, from those who catch it to those who cook and sell it. But worried about the level of illegal masking of fisheries products under different guises and wishing to reward individual fishermen and businesses who do the right thing, a coalition of tourism and conservation organizations have hit upon a plan to market the importance of sustainable fisheries under the “Fish Right, Eat Right” Campaign.27d5b4ff-8a40-494f-a4d8-fcd302a23ad0
Communications Officer for OCEANA, Alyssa Carnegie, says this is a unique opportunity for businesses associated with the fishing industry to give back to those at the base of the pyramid.

The program runs for the next six months to a year and is the first of its kind in our region. Executive
chefs Sean Kuylen and Jennie Staines, the latter of Elvi’s Kitchen in San Pedro Town, say they have practiced their own form of a sustainable fishing program by paying top dollar for lesser-fished species such as lionfish and getting behind the cooperatives to stop allowing their fishermen to get by with poorly produced product.

According to Kuylen, certain buzzwords can help with a solid marketing campaign for sustainable fisheries.

The program follows on from the Fisheries Department’s recently announced plans to move to managed access of local fisheries.
