Fishery stakeholders want you to “Fish Right, Eat Right”

By Chrisbert Garcia: Earlier today, stakeholders in conservation and fisheries met to launch “Fish right, Eat right”, which is a certification program that will promote sustainable and legal trade of seafood, backed by an educational campaign.

This program aims to reduce instances of illegal fishing while promoting good fishing practices through the use of incentives such as giving special recognition to establishments that demonstrate knowledge, as well as compliance with fisheries regulations.

Since it is early in the program’s existence, it will only be targeting restaurants and hotels but plans are in order to expand and include cooperatives, fish markets, supermarkets and other seafood purveyors. An advertising campaign is also in motion for tourists and the general public to support the compliant establishments.

‘Fish right, Eat right’ will help restaurants meet demands for healthy products with a supply chain that will deliver and will also offer alternative options for consumption that can reduce fishing pressure on species that are over-exploited or endangered.

This initiative will help to make it easier for consumers to make sustainable choices that ensure the health of our oceans.
