By BBN Staff: Observed on April 7th every year, World Health Day provides a unique opportunity to mobilize action around a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world.

The Ministry of Health is commemorating the day by organizing a health forum on the World Health Organization theme for 2017 —“Depression – Let’s Talk.”

The forum will be held on Friday, April 7th at the Ramada Princess Hotel in Belize City starting at 9:00 a.m.

Topics at the forum will include, ‘What Depression Feels like’ and ‘Real men get depressed too’.

According to the Ministry of Health, depression is the strongest risk factor for suicide and in 2016, the male to female ratio for deaths by suicide in Belize was four to one.

“People do not choose to be depressed. Many Belizeans of all ethnic groups are affected by depression. Depression can have consequences on our personal lives and the lives of those closest to us. Talking about your feelings to a family member, a trusted person, or a professional can be helpful to many who are suffering from this disease, the Ministry of Health said in a press release.

The Mental Health Program of the Ministry of Health encourages Belizeans to talk about their feelings not only on World Health Day, but every opportunity possible.

The Ministry also advises persons who are suffering from depression to visit the Mental Health Clinics across the country to seek free psychological services, counselling, and treatment.

World Health Day has been celebrated globally since 1950.
