Lisa Shoman appointed to IDB Admin Tribunal

By BBN Staff: Attorney at Law, Lisa Shoman has been appointed as a judge on the Inter- American Development’s Bank Administrative Tribunal.

Shoman will serve for six years and her new appointment commences on July 1, 2017.

Shoman is the first Belizean to be appointed to this position.

This Tribunal was established to settle the disputes which arise out of the employment relationship of the Bank or the Corporation with their staff members.

According to the IDB’s website, the Tribunal is made up of seven judges, whose only link to the IDB is their service as judges on the Tribunal. The judges must be nationals of member countries, but no two of them can be from the same country. They must be persons of recognized professional competence and integrity who have the necessary qualifications to occupy a similar position in the highest judicial courts of their countries or who are juris consults of recognized competence.

The meetings are held in Washington DC, four to six times per year.

Shoman has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Belize to the United States.

Shoman is also active in gender issues and politics in Belize.

On her social media page, Shoman said that her appointment proves that “we, from the Jewel have what it takes. It just takes perseverance, tenacity, determination and work.”
