By Aaron Humes: Just over 700 delegates are to decide today by secret ballot which of National Security Minister John Saldivar and Education Minister Patrick Faber succeed Gaspar Vega as first deputy leader of the United Democratic Party.

The two powerful Ministers have been fighting tooth and nail for delegates’ support, with a majority of area representatives including Vega supporting Saldivar.

patrick faber 2Faber however says he believes he commands a large swath of delegates.

Prime Minister and party leader Dean Barrow has remained neutral. The winner of today’s convention has the inside track to potentially succeed him when he leaves in 2020.

Results from the ITVET grounds in Belize City are expected this evening.
