Taiwan’s Foreign Minister arrives to Belize today

BBN Staff:  Dr. Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Foreign Minister of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will undertake a two-day visit to Belize starting today, July 16, 2018, on the invitation of Wilfred P. Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize.

According to a release from Taiwan’s Embassy in Belize, during Minister Wu’s first visit to the country, Minister Elrington will confer him the prestigious Order of Distinction, in recognition of the friendly relations between Belize and the ROC (Taiwan) and of the valuable contributions that Taiwan has made to Belize over the past three decades.

Minister Wu will also meet Prime Minister Dean Barrow, President Lee Mark Chang of the Senate, Deputy Speaker Dr. Omar Figueroa of the House of the Representatives and other Cabinet members of the Government of Belize.

During these meetings, Minister Wu and Belizean officials will reaffirm not just the strong ties between the two nations, but also the unwavering commitment from both sides to continue building the friendship and partnership upon existing foundations, as they work toward exploring more opportunities for bilateral collaboration that contributes to national development of Belize and closer people-to-people exchanges between Belize and Taiwan.

The Belize-ROC (Taiwan) bilateral relations have been going from strength to strength since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1989, with steady advances made in extensive areas from infrastructure, agriculture, public health, poverty alleviation to information, communications and technology (ICT), education and natural disaster prevention and mitigation.

Minister Wu is accompanied by his wife Madam Wu. His delegation includes: Ambassador Tah-Ray Yui, Director-General of Latin America and Caribbean Department, Ambassador Tien-Yie Hsiang, Secretary General of the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund, and Mr. Yi-Hsiang Chao, Director of the Office of Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Through many cooperation projects, the Government of the ROC (Taiwan) continues to pride itself as a committed development partner for Belize in its unwavering pursuit of upgrading and diversifying its economy and national development.
