By BBN Staff: On Sunday, Carla Barnett contested the United Democratic Party (UDP) convention for the Freetown Division.
Barnett was being supported by Belmopan Area Representative and UDP leader contender, John Saldivar. However, Barnett lost the convention to Orson Elrington who was being backed by Deputy Party Leader of the UDP, Patrick Faber.
After Barnett lost the convention, several women party affiliates of the UDP took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the lack of support for women in their party.
In an interview with the media after her defeat, Barnett announced that she is withdrawing from politics.
Barnett said that it is not an ‘even field’ for women but she hopes that other women will be able to run for office.
“ If you play a clean game it is just difficult. I am stepping aside. I am not doing this again… There are no rules to the game so to speak,” Barnett stated.
