Belizean youths honored at Youth Awards 2019

By BBN Staff: The Department of Youth Services, Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture, held its annual Belize Youth Awards on November 29, at the Belize Civic Center under the theme “Youth Mental Health matter; Let’s erase the Stigma”.

Young people aged between 14 and 29 years old were honored for their participation and contribution to the overall achievement of our very own National Youth Development Policy, Horizon 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Patrick Faber addressed the audience and encouraged the youth population to keep working hard to develop Belize.

 Former CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Tarun Butcher was the guest speaker and eloquently addressed the issue of youth mental health.

The Award winners are as follows: Youth in Agriculture-Christian Salazar Jr., Diversely Abled Award- Mark Garbutt Jr., Environmental Steward Award-Sonia Rosales, Youth Club of the Year-Friends for Conservation Development YG, Youth in Entrepreneurship-Vianey Blades, Innovation in Technology- Belize High School, Young Visual Artist-Edgar Gomez, Youth in Journalism- Kory Leslie, Social Media Influencer- Let’s Go Belizing, Young Musician- Ian Yacab, Outstanding Student Government- Belize High School, Strength Through Adversity-Roy Cutkelvin Jr, Athletic Excellence (Female)- Katie Jones, Athletic Excellence (Male)-Caanan Smith, Academic Excellence-Alexis Guy, Youth Minister’s Award for Leadership and Advocacy-Nayobie Rivero. International Youth Volunteer Group went to National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan.

Allison Brown-Mckenzie, director of the Department of Youth Services, stated “we must highlight our young people for their contribution to development in Belize” and the youth awards is designed to paint a better picture of what our young people can and are doing in their communities.

The Youth Awards was sponsored by Digi, Development Finance Corporation, Belize Tourism Board, the Embassy of the Republic China, Taiwan, Fultec System, Atlantic Bank, Simon Quan Ltd, and a host of other agencies.

The Awards demonstrated to leaders and other policy-makers the importance of young people’s role in development and served to inspire other young people to take action in their communities.
