US based travel agent promoting Belize struggles to resume business amid pandemic

By Aaron Humes: The return of travel and tourism on October 1^st has not eased uncertainties among potential clients according to Barbara Kasak, owner of Barb’s Belize, a Belize specialist travel agent based in Augusta County, Virginia, U.S.A. 

“People are uncertain about whether they can travel safely. People don’t want to be in airports. People don’t want to be in airplanes. I think the whole industry has had to rethink things,” Kasak explained to WHSV-TV. 

Barb’s Belize travel agency was having one of its best years for bookings to Belize at the start of 2020 as Belize, which is an unusual location was “finally on the radar of a lot of people,” according to Kasak. She had been active in the business for more than 35 years and her associates are seasoned travelers, who have an intimate knowledge of Belize, and personal relationships with the hotel owners and staff that they work with.

But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and bookings to Belize for April, May and the rest of the year virtually disappeared, aided by a virtual shutdown of the country in that time. 

Kasak guided clients through the process of rescheduling activities, which was filled with uncertainties: “No one knew it would last this long,” she said. 

Now, Kasak is collecting unemployment and only dealing with repeat clients for the rest of 2020. 

But she is not giving up. Kasak advised now is the best time to use a travel agent because they can navigate these unusual travel scenarios, research destinations & requirements, keep abreast of changes and protocols, and assist with any exchanges or cancellations.
