COVID-19 spreads to rural India, villages not prepared to fight it

Posted: Thursday, May 6, 2021. 11:51 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: India is facing a deadly second wave of COVID-19. Hospitals are filled to capacity and countries continue to send aid to assist in the fight against the virus.

But the virus has now spread to rural areas where the villages are not prepared to fight it.

The healthcare system has become overwhelmed and a record 412,262 new cases and 3,980 deaths were reported over the past 24 hours.

Total infections are now past 21 million and the overall death toll is now 230,168, Health Ministry data showed.

In several towns, patients are being treated under trees and on the ground, Reuters report.

India is the world’s largest vaccine producer but it is now struggling to produce enough doses.

Several states have imposed various levels of social restrictions in an attempt to stem infections.
