TikTok to roll out ways to filter ‘mature’ videos

Posted: Thursday, July 14, 2022. 1:35 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Social media giant, TikTok announced that it will roll out several updates to allow users to customize their viewing preferences, CNN reports.

Users will be able to filter out content that may be problematic or too mature for young users. This move comes amidst renewed scrutiny of the potential harms social media poses to teens.

The video app says that users will see fewer videos about topics that can be problematic including videos on topics related to dieting, extreme fitness, and sadness.

In addition, the app will introduce a new system that organizes content based on maturity, allocating a “maturity score”.

The company says that the goal is “to help prevent content with overtly mature themes from reaching audiences between ages 13-17.”

The company added that it is committed to safeguarding the teen experience.
