Queen of the Bay contestants sashed and gowned; pageant coming on Saturday

By Aaron Humes: On Sunday night, contestants for the Queen of the Bay pageant are being formally sashed at an opening gala ceremony at the House of Culture in Belize City.

The preliminary talent competition takes place on Wednesday at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts starting at 7 p.m., ahead of pageant night on Saturday, August 20 at 7 p.m. at the same venue.

The pageant has continued in an unbroken line, shaking off all manner of disasters from hurricanes to COVID, and is now in its 77th year.

A statement from organizers this week explained why: “The selection of the Queen of the Bay is an integral part of our culture and history. With its beginning rooted in sovereignty, this pageant continues to be a symbol of love and hope and freedom for Belizeans.”

Ticket prices for the talent competition are 10 dollars for adults and 2 dollars for children; pageant tickets are available through Belize Ticket Master at prices of $20, $40, and $50 respectively.

The winner formally succeeds Druewell Jones on September 10 during official St George’s Caye Day ceremonies.
