Galen Eagles capture ATLIB Men’s National Basketball Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Galen Eagles beat Wesley Junior College (WJC) to win the 2023 Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) Men’s National Basketball Championship at the Sacred Heart Junior College Auditorium in San Ignacio on Saturday.

In the tournament’s final, the Galen Eagles outplayed Wesley 54-27. MVP Joel Montejo led the Eagles scoring 19 points. Kerwin Palacio and Brandon Flowers added ten points each. Luwani Cayetano hit 12 points for Wesley while Kerdell Tench added eight points.

Muffles Junior College won third place by defeating Ecumenical Junior College 60-44. Tayshaun Dawson was the topscorer with 21 points. Rasheed Reneau contributed 19 and Norris Fisher sunk 14. Ecumenical were led by Donnell Arzu and Kevon Lourie who scored 13 points each.

Wesley qualified to the final slipping past Muffles 46-43 led by Cayetano’s 16 points and Tench’s eight. Reneau scored a tournament high 23 points for Muffles. Jamar Higinio added ten.

The Galen Eagles made it to the final dropping Ecumenical 57-36 on 11 points by Jaheim Ciego and 10 by Brandon Flowers. Ecumenical’s Donnell Arzu was the game’s topscorer converting 22 points. Lourie netted eight points.
