International News: Historic heat wave affecting Puerto Rico and Caribbean

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Meteorologists are concerned about a historic heat wave affecting Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

According to The Washington Post, the heat index has reached as high as 125 degrees, and the dangerous heat is expected to continue through the weekend.

Puerto Rico’s weather service has issued excessive heat watches and warnings for different parts of Puerto Rico and urged residents to take precautions amid “[p]rolonged periods of dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity.”

In Belize, temperatures have soared above 100 degrees and the National Meteorological Service of Belize continues to issue heat alerts urging residents to avoid outdoor activities.

Night-time temperatures have also been unbearable with temperatures remaining above 100 degrees.

Weather historian Maximiliano Herrera said that “Nearly all over the Caribbean temperatures are at record levels.”

In addition, water temperatures in portions of the Atlantic are the warmest on record.

Globally, the world’s oceans have been running at record high temperatures since March.

 The warm waters contribute to warmer air temperatures and also lead to higher humidity, which makes the air feel even hotter.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is urging residents to keep hydrated and seek shade during these hot days.
