International News: U.N. experts arrive in Honduras to discuss establishment of anti-corruption mission

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, a mission of experts from the United Nations arrived in Honduras to examine the establishment of an international anti-corruption mission, Reuters report.

Honduran President, Xiomara Castro pledged to establish an anti-corruption commission known as the International Commission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (CICIH).

Civil society groups have maintained pressure for this to become a reality.

Last December, the Honduran Government signed a letter of intent with the UN to promote the installation of the mission in Honduras, where U.S. diplomats say $3 billion is lost annually and local authorities say 74% of the population lives in poverty.

“We are going to start negotiating with the UN mission the conditions for the installation of the international anti-corruption body,” Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina stated.

This commission would be the 2^nd anti-corruption mission in Honduras.

In 2016, the Mission to Support Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) was installed with the backing of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Obama administration.

That mission exposed the corruption of officials, legislators and politicians, many linked to former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was extradited to the United States on drug trafficking charges after leaving power in 2022.
