By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On July 19, 2023, 33 Community Oriented Policing Officers graduated from a 2-week training to empower them to engage middle and upper divisions in essential life skills.
Those include areas such as No Bullying, Empathy, Civic Pride, Respecting others, and No to illicit behaviors such as gang-related activities.
The officers were trained to use a newly developed teaching and learning resource, which replaces the American-based Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (GREAT).
The newly contextualized program dubbed Positive Engagement, and Civic Education (PEACE) reflects the realities of Belize and caters to children living under challenging circumstances or requiring specific support and guidance.
“The new PEACE Program comprises Lessons for Middle Division and Upper Division Students. Included in each of the resources are specific reinforcement activities that facilitate personal development and good citizenship,” Community policing Commander, Howell Gillett explained.
“This resource is scheduled to be piloted in 10 schools in the Belize District and selected schools countrywide in September 2023,” Gillett added.
Gillett says that during the first phase, some 3,000 students countrywide will benefit from this initiative.
The PEACE program has garnered support from the U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology.
