Leader of the Opposition and British High Commissioner discuss policy priorities

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow met with British High Commissioner Nicole Davison and Deputy High Commissioner Kate Reynolds.

Discussions included the Opposition’s policy priorities such as equal access to education, vocational training, access to public quality healthcare, job security, citizen security, affordable housing, equal rights for all including LGBT, renewable energy and anti corruption.

In addition, Barrow says that they discussed Belize removing the monarch as Head of State by referendum and further affirming National Identity through placing National Heroes on Belize’s currency as a Sovereign Nation.

“I’m pleased that High Commissioner Davison expressed that the British Government‘s policy is to support whatever pathway the Belizean people feel is best for our self determination.

HC Davison underlined the policy of support by pointing out that King Charles attended Barbados’s ceremony to remove the monarchy as Head of State and become a republic,” Barrow stated.

Among topics discussed, Barrow reiterated the need for greater British economic cooperation with Belize.

“Given our shared history it is important for Britain to invest in Belize from both private and public sector.

As we approach Emancipation Day on August 1st, we discussed reparations and how British economic investment is one way to fix and repair the historical atrocities enslaved people’s suffered in Belize,” Barrow added.

The Leader of the Opposition says that he looks forward to strengthening relations as members of the Commonwealth with a shared history and aligned ideals.
