Belize commemorates Emancipation Day 2023

Posted: Monday, July 31, 2023. 5:57 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: On this day, Belize solemnly remembers the 189th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and the 185th anniversary of the termination of the apprenticeship system. The commemoration of Emancipation Day is being marked as a public and bank holiday for the third consecutive year, aligning Belize with its Caribbean neighbors in recognition of this momentous historical occurrence.

In 2023, Belize continues to focus on education and reflection on its history, particularly the complex legacy of slavery. A crucial component of this effort is the virtual exhibit titled ‘Documentary Heritage of Enslavement and Emancipation in Belize.’ This online resource provides the public with an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the reality of African enslavement within the country’s borders. To visit the exhibit, follow this link: August 1st, 1838 | Belize Emancipation Day.

Emancipation Day serves as an essential moment of reflection on the dark chapters of human rights abuses in the history of Belize and the wider world. At the same time, it symbolizes the nation’s continued dedication to fostering a society that champions equality, justice, and inclusivity. With this commemoration, Belize not only acknowledges its historical past but also looks forward to a future of harmony, unity, and growth, free from the socio-economic disparities born out of historical injustices.
