By Breaking Belize News Staff: In what can only be described as an unprecedented assembly, nearly 2,000 teachers from the Belize District and the Cayes united at the St Catherine’s Academy Auditorium in Belize City on August 29, 2023. This momentous gathering was the second meeting of the “Teachers Constitution Education Forum,” a joint initiative of The People’s Constitution Commission, Belize National Teachers Union, and The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology.

The forum opened with an enlightening talk by Mr. Edd Usher. Delving into the Fundamental Rights and the preamble of the Belize Constitution, his presentation ignited spirited discussions among the audience, highlighting the educators’ passion and curiosity.

Following Mr. Usher, Attorney Mr. Darrell Bradley engaged the audience with his comprehensive insights on good governance and accountability. Given that his discussion stretched beyond an hour, it was evident that the topic resonated deeply with the attendees.

To foster interaction and understanding, an extensive Q&A segment followed the talks by both Mr. Usher and Mr. Bradley. Teachers enthusiastically utilized this platform to clarify their doubts and share their perspectives on the Belize Constitution.

A key feature of this forum was the reintroduction of the PCC’s Citizen’s Survey, administered via QR codes. With logistical support from the Statistical Institute of Belize providing devices, even educators without personal gadgets could participate in this vital exercise.

Mrs. Jamie Usher, Belize High School’s Principal, wrapped up the day’s sessions with an announcement that garnered much anticipation. Discussing the upcoming National Debate, she elucidated the goals of this initiative: to cultivate a deeper understanding of constitutional subjects among Belize’s youth. The National Debate is yet another example of the synergistic collaboration between Belize’s educational institutions and governmental bodies, particularly The Belize High School, The People’s Constitution Commission, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology.

Recognizing the importance of such partnerships, The People’s Constitution Commission lauded Mrs. Jamie Usher and Belize High School for their crucial contributions to the project.

The forum’s conclusion brought with it the news that a third edition is on the horizon. Set to be hosted in Belize’s western region, further details are eagerly awaited by educators and stakeholders alike.

As Belize continues its journey of constitutional introspection and potential reform, the involvement and education of its teaching community are undeniably vital. The success of the Teachers Constitution Education Forum stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to informed, collaborative decision-making.
