By Horace Palacio: In a fiery Independence Day speech, Shyne Barrow, the Leader of the Opposition, lashed out at the current Briceno Administration, raising significant concerns about governance and democratic stability in Belize.
Barrow characterized the ruling government as “embattled,” referring to the ongoing Portico Corruption Senate Investigation, accusations of ministerial sexual assault, and what he called “murderous land corruption.” Barrow also drew attention to the alarming rise in national debt, stating that the government has borrowed almost $1 billion in the last three years while the country grapples with ongoing crises.
“Instead of moving closer to complete freedom and economic independence, we are further away than ever,” Barrow stated, targeting the administration’s approach to governance. He further noted that his remarks come at a time when the political climate is already charged, due to various instances of alleged corruption and malfeasance leading to an increase in public disenchantment.
Another sharp criticism from Barrow focused on what he termed the “weaponization” of the nation’s Constitution against the Opposition and marginalized segments of society. He accused the Briceno Administration of steering away from meaningful Constitutional reform that would expand and protect civil rights.
“Instead of Constitutional Reform that will expand rights, give greater protection of rights, give greater freedoms and strengthen our Democracy, our Constitution is being weaponized to target the Opposition and disenfranchise segments of our society,” Barrow said.
The Opposition Leader called for unity and a recommitment to democratic principles as the nation observed its Independence Day.
