Belize celebrates Indigenous People’s Resistance Day 2023

Posted: Monday, October 9, 2023. 4:38 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Today, Belizeans across the nation are commemorating Indigenous People’s Resistance Day, marking two years since the significant renaming of what was previously known as Columbus Day and Pan American Day. The monumental decision in 2021 by the Belize government is a testament to the nation’s commitment to recognizing the resilience, survival, and resistance of its indigenous people, especially the Mayas.

Speaking upon the name change in 2021, the Minister responsible for holidays, Kareem Musa, commented, “All of Cabinet, unanimously, agreed that the proper name for October twelfth should be Indigenous People’s Resistance Day, to acknowledge, to recognize the survival, the struggle, and the resistance of indigenous people in Belize, in particular the Mayas.”

While the official date of Indigenous People’s Resistance Day is October 12th, Belizeans are enjoying a day off today, October 9th, granting them a three-day weekend to reflect on and celebrate the rich history and contributions of the indigenous communities.

As 2023 unfolds, Belizeans are also gearing up for the upcoming Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th. Given that it falls on a Sunday this year, the holiday will be observed on Monday, November 20th, ensuring that citizens get their well-deserved break.

To wrap up the festive spirit of 2023, the Christmas holidays are scheduled for Monday, December 25th, and Tuesday, December 26th (Boxing Day), with New Year’s Day welcoming Belizeans on Monday, January 1st, 2024.
