Today’s Annular solar eclipse will turn sun into ‘ring of fire’

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Skygazers are gearing up to experience today’s annular solar eclipse.

The annular solar eclipse will begin to sweep across the U.S. from Oregon to Texas before heading across the Gulf of Mexico and over Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil.

During the eclipse, the moon will pass between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet.

When the moon doesn’t entirely cover the sun’s disk, it will create a “ring of fire” leaving a sliver of sunlight around the moon.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology warns against staring at the eclipse with the naked eye.

This can cause serious, irreversible eye damage.   

It’s best to use sun protection for eclipse viewing to safeguard your eyes from potentially permanent and severe damage caused by the intense solar radiation.

The live-stream of the eclipse viewing will be on the Ministry’s Facebook page featuring the students, faculty, and staff of It’zat academy.
