By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Belize is in the path of an Annular Social Eclipse from around 9:00am to 12:00 noon.
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Belize informed that the eclipse could have an affect on domestic and wild animals countrywide.
“As the moon blocks out the sun, the sudden change in daylight can confuse animals and have a change in their behavior. Birds may stop singing and return to their nests, while nocturnal animals may emerge thinking night has fallen,” WCS Belize said.
Viewing events are being hosted countrywide and highlighting the cultural history and beliefs of the eclipse.
“The Ancient Mayan communities in Belize and Central America in the past had a well-established astronomical tradition and had accurately predicted the cycles that produce solar eclipses for centuries,” WCS added.
Belize is home to over 600 ancient Mayan sites with about 30 open sites for visitors mostly found within the dense forest areas.
Many of these sites still remain unexplored and buried.
