“Ring of Fire” eclipse mesmerizes millions, Belize celebrates a cosmic dance

By Horace Palacio: The heavens offered a celestial spectacle this Saturday as the moon glided between Earth and the sun, casting a radiant “ring of fire” across the Americas. Belize, one of the countries along the eclipse’s path, experienced a cosmic dance that will be remembered for generations.

As the skies darkened and crescent-shaped shadows emerged on Belizean grounds, waves of excitement reverberated throughout the nation. Locals and tourists alike paused their day to witness the rare annular solar eclipse.

With tools ranging from box projectors to telescopes, people immersed themselves in the splendor of the cosmic event. The transition from daylight to an ethereal dusk induced a harmonious chorus of birds, recapturing the daylight shortly after the moon’s passage.

Ancient Maya astronomers, who once spanned regions including present-day Belize, referred to such phenomena as the “broken sun”. Arturo Montero, an archeologist from Tepeyac University in Mexico City, surmised that these astronomers might have used dark volcanic glass to shield their eyes during eclipses.

The eclipse’s journey, which painted a ring of fire in the skies for three to five minutes depending on the location, stretched from parts of the U.S. to Central America, including Belize, and reached as far as Brazil. The rest of the Western Hemisphere was treated to a partial eclipse.

As the event streamed globally, Belize found itself in the global spotlight. The ancient Maya lands once again resonated with celestial significance, celebrating an event that unifies people through shared wonder and amazement.

With the next ring of fire eclipse not returning to this region until 2039, Belizeans and their fellow eclipse-watchers in the Americas will cherish the memory of this cosmic dance for years to come.
