Ministry of Agriculture meets with vegetable growers to discuss production

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) held the National Vegetable Stakeholder’s Meeting at the National Agriculture Show Grounds in Belmopan on Thursday.

MAFSE officers met with the country’s vegetable producers before the upcoming crop cycle to discuss issues such as production costs, commodity prices, contraband, quality, and production calendars.

The MAFSE team was led by Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza.

MAFSE meets with the country’s agricultural producers before and after crops to discuss the above-mentioned issues. As recently as Wednesday, October 29, MAFSE met with the grain producers in Blue Creek, Orange Walk to discuss the current situation and challenges of the grain sector in Belize.

The MAFSE officers met with representatives of the grain growing communities of Blue Creek, Shipyard, Indian Creek, Spanish Lookout, Neuland, and Little Belize, who produce soybeans, sorghum, beans (Red Kidney, Pinto, Black Eye), and corn.

They addressed issues such as pests and diseases that affect production, yields and factors that affect it, such as climate change, market access, and quality standards.

MAFSE said that as part of its assessment, field visits are carried out as well.
