By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man, from a Pink’s Alley address, got off with a $500 fine after allegedly assaulting a police officer during the ruckus of a scuffle at a pre-Garifuna Settlement Day celebration on Freetown.

Steven Barrington Flowers Jr. appeared in court unrepresented on Tuesday and immediately threw himself at the mercy of the court. He pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a police officer.

He explained to the court that he was out with his girlfriend at a drumming event on November 18 and a fight broke out. In the commotion, he claims he felt someone approaching him and asa reflex reaction he pushed at the unknown man who he later found out to be a police officer.

The magistrate hearing the case decided to impose a non-custodial sentence and determined his fine to be $500 plus $5 cost of court instead of the usual mandatory $1,000 fine.
