Belize Police report significant drop in murders: ComPol Williams highlights 20% reduction

By Horace Palacio: Police Commissioner Chester Williams has announced a significant decrease in the country’s murder rate. With the year nearing its end, the Belize Police Department is intensifying its efforts to sustain the trend of decreasing crime rates, particularly in violent crimes.

In his annual Christmas message, Commissioner Williams shared uplifting news: the country has witnessed a 20% reduction in murders compared to previous years. This improvement marks a milestone for Belize, as the number of murders has fallen to its lowest since 2006, breaking a 17-year record.

“This year, we have seen a tremendous reduction in murders,” Williams stated in his address. “Our historical data indicates that it’s the lowest since 2006. We’re looking at a 17-year record that is going to be broken.”

The Commissioner acknowledged the challenges faced by the department, including periods of intense scrutiny and criticism. However, he emphasized the resilience and determination of the Belize Police Department in overcoming these obstacles to ensure the safety of Belizean citizens.

“We have had some very tough times,” said Williams. “There have been instances where our ability to reduce crime was questioned. Despite all the negative press, we have demonstrated our resilience and commitment to excellence in ensuring the safety of our Belizean people.”

The achievement is attributed to a collaborative approach involving various stakeholders and the implementation of enhanced policing strategies. Williams expressed gratitude towards the support provided by the Minister of Police, the Prime Minister, and other members of the cabinet. This “all of government” approach to combating crime has been pivotal in achieving these results.
