Ringing in a rare date: Celebrating 12/31/23; A once-in-a-century New Year’s Eve

Posted: Sunday, December 31, 2023. 3:08 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: As Belizeans both at home and abroad prepare to ring in the New Year, there’s an added element of excitement in the air. The year 2023 is drawing to a close on a date that holds a unique significance: 12/31/23. This sequence, occurring only once every century, is setting the stage for a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration across the nation.

Unlike the palindromes that graced the calendar earlier this year – a sequence of dates from March 20th to March 29th that read the same forwards and backwards – December 31st, 2023, does not fall into this category. However, its rarity is no less significant. The last occurrence of this date sequence was in 1923, and it won’t repeat until December 31, 2123.

During March, the world experienced a rare palindrome stretch with dates like 3-20-23, 3-21-23, up to 3-29-23. Palindromes hold a special place in numerology and are often considered auspicious, as per the Farmer’s Almanac. They are treasured for their rarity and symmetry.

This year’s unique New Year’s Eve sequence, while not a palindrome, is attracting attention for its own reasons. According to the Farmer’s Almanac and various numerology enthusiasts, the sequence 123123 is seen as significant. Some numerologists refer to these repeating numbers as “angel numbers,” which, as reported by USA Today, are thought to be a positive omen or a “green light” for new beginnings and ventures.

Furthermore, the numbers in this year’s New Year’s Eve date add up to 12, a number that some believe to be a “master number” associated with spiritual enlightenment and growth.

In anticipation of this unique date, a variety of New Year’s Eve memorabilia and merchandise celebrating “123123” has already appeared online, catering to those who wish to commemorate this once-in-a-century occurrence.

As the nation prepares for the festivities, Belizeans everywhere are reminded to celebrate responsibly. In the spirit of the season, and in anticipation of the opportunities and adventures that 2024 may bring, Breaking Belize News extends warm wishes to all Belizeans, both at home and abroad: Happy New Year! May the unique spirit of 12/31/23 bring joy, prosperity, and peace in the coming year.
