Government breaks ground on rehabilitation of access road to Corozal Free Zone

Posted: Thursday, January 11, 2024. 1:24 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes, Corozal Free Zone, Corozal District: With a $1.9 million non-refundable grant from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), Government will break ground today on “the last mile” – the 1.6 kilometers from the old bridge linking Belize to Mexico to the entrance of the Corozal Free Zone.

CEO for Economic Development Dr Osmond Martinez cited a 20 percent increase in traffic into the Zone in 2023 and predicted more as a result of rehabilitation of this important piece of road.

The President of CABEI, Gisela Sanchez Maroto, in her first visit to Belize, cited the expected growth of operations in the Zone as fulfilling its commitment to fueling sustainable development and competitiveness.

Agriculture Minister Jose Mai, whose Ministry has responsibility for the CFZ, called the project long in the making, after finding the area to be neglected and in poor condition. The impact extends to visitors coming to Belize through the Tren Maya project in Mexico, and expanded water and broadband services will further boost its development.

Prime Minister John Briceño, who says he is actually making his first ever visit to the CFZ, called it the place where the Americas meet and a catalyst for economic development, a symbol of opportunities with minimal interference.

The project will be supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing and executed by RJB Construction.
