Get your pap smear, Early detection can save LIVES!

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: January is recognized as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and is an opportunity to raise awareness and campaigns so that more women are urged to do their Pap smears.

Cervical cancer can be cured if diagnosed and treated at an early stage of disease.

Recognizing symptoms and seeking medical advice to address any concerns is a critical step. Women should see a healthcare professional if they notice:

    unusual bleeding between periods, after menopause, or after sexual intercourse

    increased or foul-smelling vaginal discharge

    symptoms like persistent pain in the back, legs, or pelvis

    weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite

    vaginal discomfort

    swelling in the legs

In addition, women are urged to get their Pap Smear done.

The Belize Cancer Society and Shalue Butcher O’Brien are launching a campaign and raising awareness.

Shalue says that early detection through a Pap smear saved her life.

As the San Ignacio and Santa Elena community continue to mourn the loss of Lorena Garcia, Shalue reminds that during her battle with cancer she urged to continue to reach more women so that they can be saved.

 “You wanna know the hard truth, our beloved Curls Garcia would be here if only she had her yearly pap smear. She would be the first to tell you. Stop play and get your PAP SMEAR and men, get those women you love to be smeared. I will be in your face until I stop burying our beautiful women. Colocha, our plan continues! Lu ya Chica Bonita!
