BSI announces plantation white sugar returns to local shelves at 75 cents per pound

Posted: Thursday, January 25, 2024. 9:05 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: After weeks of shortfall and increased prices of imported sugar, Belize Sugar Industries (BSI) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) have announced that plantation white sugar has returned to local shelves at 75 cents per pound.

“Customers are advised that all imported refined sugar has been sold and today, January 25, 2024, BSI resumed the sale of plantation white sugar (PWS) for the domestic market. Production of PWS is now ongoing with the crop in full swing. Consumers can expect product to make it to the shelves in the coming days and the price will revert to the control price of 75 cents per lb,” a statement from BSI said.

“We are happy to note the update from BSI,” the MAFSE said in its own statement on the matter. The news is welcome as sugar shortages plunged the industry into crisis heading into the Christmas holiday.
