UDP Shadow Cabinet condemns violence against women, rape and shaming victims in light of allegations against prominent politicians

By Aaron Humes: In a recent statement, the United Democratic Party’s Shadow Cabinet referred to allegations made against two prominent politicians, one a member of the People’s United Party and Minister of Government, the other one of their own.

“Shadow Cabinet condemns all acts of violence against women. We sympathize with all rape victims and reject victim shaming. We respect the presumption of innocence…,” the statement reads, repeating its call that the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] will conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation in her determination in the matter of the accused attorney. That attorney is confirmed to have resigned from party related posts in the wake of the accusations and submitted to an interview with police, who continue to gather evidence for the file which is currently with the DPP.

The party also called for an update on the Attorney General’s investigation of Andre Perez, who this week said he is not losing sleep over returning to Cabinet. The A.G. has not publicly commented since announcing last year that the investigation was near an end and Prime Minister John Briceno, who received the initial complaint and holds ultimate power over who serves in Cabinet, has indicated that the matter remains on hold while Perez continues to be area representative for Belize Rural South.

While the UDP claims that Perez was accused of certain acts, those are the province of the Police Department which has yet to receive a formal accusation from the accuser, who is at last report out of the country.
