Whose responsibility is it to pave Cemetery Road? ‘It will get done’

Posted: Sunday, February 4, 2024. 8:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It is the key artery to enter Belize City’s downtown from anywhere in the country for buses and other transport – but Cemetery Road between Central American Boulevard and Pound Yard Bridge is in atrocious driving condition.

However, there has been some back and forth between the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) and the Belize City Council over whose responsibility it is to pave Cemetery Road.

Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters that it really doesn’t matter – the road will be fixed: “It’s going to get fixed, that’s the important thing. Obviously, we are in partnership with the City Council so the Ministry of Infrastructure is going to partner with the City Council to get it done.”

A few weeks ago in a press interview, the Mayor of Belize City, Bernard Wagner, suggested that it was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry, but in his own interview on Thursday Minister Julius Espat referred reporters to the Public Roads Act which specifically lists roadways that the Ministry is obligated to maintain.

In addition to all four major highways and the Coastal and Old Northern Roads, Central American Boulevard which bisects Southside Belize City and crosses the intersection of Cemetery Road and the George Price Highway is included – but Cemetery Road itself, which extends to the junction with Elston Kerr Street and Partridge Street/Amandala Drive, is not.

But also on Thursday, Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler confirmed that the street is expected to be paved within the next couple of days, through a collaboration between MIDH, CitCo, and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) – and none too soon, he lamented: “As you can see, it took me a while to get from down there to here. It’s really bad after the rains. And so we saw it as an entrance or we see it as an entrance into the city. And it is important. A lot of the buses pass through here. And so it has to be welcoming…it is important for us to be able to invest in the infrastructure for us to be able to monetize the resources that we have, even more.”
