Spike in gun violence in Belize City prompts State of Emergency

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the weekend, Belize City recorded 4 shooting incidents, 2 of which were fatal.

As a result, authorities have reportedly enacted a State of Emergency.

The measure is expected to contain any violence that may be associated with Friday’s murder of Elwin “Bobo” Lewis.

However, it is also a response to the high number of murders in Belize.

There have been 26 murders so far this year, a 37% increase compared to 19 during the same time last year.

Law enforcement authorities are yet to announce the State of Emergency measure.
