Posted: Tuesday, April 9, 2024. 12:57 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On April 8, 2024, U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Hayward Alto visited El Pilar Archeological Site, exploring its rich Mayan history and cultural significance.

Mayor Earl Trapp of San Ignacio/Santa Elena met with Hayward, who congratulated him on his re-election.

An ancient Maya city center on the Belize-Guatemala border, El Pilar is a 5,000-acre protected area, declared a cultural monument in both Belize and Guatemala.

The University of California-Santa Barbara’s MesoAmerican Research Center has continued to lead site mapping, field survey, and research.

“The U.S. government remains committed to the sustainable conservation of Mayan environmental and cultural heritage in Belize,” the U.S. Embassy noted.
