johnny_briceno_pupBy Aaron Humes: This week, Orange Walk Central area representative John Briceno has been speaking about his attempt to return to leadership of the People’s United Party (PUP), which he held from 2008 to 2011.

Briceno had stepped down due to health issues, but back in fighting form, he says he is planning on doing things differently with the unity of the party in mind as well as the return to the party’s philosophy on social justice.

Briceno never led the party in a general election but in 2009 they performed well in municipal elections, retaining his native Orange Walk and winning seats elsewhere.

Briceno notes that he enjoys friendships with former PUP leader Rt. Hon. Said Musa, who plans to retire from politics after his current term, and former Belize Rural Central representative Ralph Fonseca, who essentially retired after a dramatic defeat to Michael Hutchinson in 2008. A

Another friend is no less than Prime Minister and former opposite number Dean Barrow, who has declined to select a dog in this fight. No matter how some may use it against him, Briceno says he hates no one and gets along well enough with Barrow, despite their occasional engagements in the House of Representatives.

The leadership will be decided on January 31, 2016.
