Belize Court of Appeals quashes money laundering convictions

AARON HUMES Reporting: The Belize Court of Appeal has ordered the government of Belize to return BZ$1.5 million that was forfeited from Money Exchange International after its principals Melonie and Michael Coye and employees Atlee Matute and Dietrich Kingston were convicted of the crime of money laundering.

The quashing of the convictions, bring to an end a 5 year ordeal for the group.

Preliminary court reports indicate that in handing down the judgment today, the justices of the Belize Court of Appeal decided that Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin erred in sending the case to the jury without proper direction as to how to prove forgery as an offence leading to the commission of money laundering.
