Thursday, October 8, 2015.  Aaron Humes Reporting:  Various anonymous members of the Office of the Auditor General of Belize have started a Facebook page entitled “The Corruption Starts Here.”

This is in reference to a stated goal of the Audit Department, to investigate and root out corrupt practices in Government departments.

While in practice the Department is supposed to be independent of the Government, its staffing, financing and functions are all underwritten by the Government.

But the complaints mostly concern internal treatment of the staff, comparing the Auditor General’s favorites with those who are not in her good books.

The mission statement posted on the page reads in part and we quote, “This page was developed by a number of auditors at various levels in the Office of the Auditor General of Belize as a response to 3-4 years of being oppressed, suppressed and digressed by the present “Auditor General”.

We feel it necessary to refer to her in quotations because she has absolutely no characteristic which qualifies her to be an Auditor General (AG), THE MOST technical post in the accounting sector of the Public Service. In addition to this, she has little to no administrative skills. Her management style is driven by personal ambitions and those of those she consider as her loyal subjects in a small, concentrated clique that have been willing to sacrifice their dignities for the reflection of the bone in the water, for a few dollars more through subsistence/mileage payments and other small privileges.” End quote.

Those favored by the Auditor General, the report says, perform tasks for her and seek her approval on all issues, even going so far as to reward dysfunctional officers with high grades and recommendations on the annual performance appraisals while attacking those said to be working harder with lower grades and poorer recommendations.

The page accuses the Auditor General of personally attacking opponents, especially those who openly oppose the goings-on in the department; this, they say, has led to a “silent fracture” in the comradery of the department which is getting wider. Cited as an example is an unannounced staff retreat held in July where much of the staff was not able or refused to stay overnight.

Push apparently came to shove when certain employees were targeted to lose their allowances. Now the disaffected staff say they are pushing back, anonymously, out of fear of further retaliation. They conclude and we quote, “Our department is suffering – THIS MUST BE STOPPED!!!” End quote.
