By BBN Staff: The Council of Management of the Public Service Union (PSU) has reinstated President Eldred Neal, after two months of suspension.

At the meeting held at the Hilltop Hotel in Belmopan yesterday and mediated by Solicitor General Nigel Hawke, the council decided to reinstate Neal on the condition that he will not chair the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

Neal will only be allowed to give his presentation, and then the vice-president will take over. It is reported that 11 council members voted to end Neal’s suspension. Neal was suspended in May for making derogatory remarks about the Garifuna members of the PSU. He initially said that the recordings, which were leaked to the media were the subject of editing geared towards tarnishing his reputation, but later accepted responsibility for the statements made and apologized.

His reinstatement has caused outrage within members of the Garifuna community in Belize and the diaspora.

BBN understands that at least four Garifuna groups in the US are preparing a letter to the PSU, voicing their concerns about the reinstatement.
