By BBN Staff: Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley has debunked claims made by Mayoral candidate Phillip Willoughby that the council will be writing off property taxes for needy Belizeans.

In an interview with Channel 7, Bradley explained that he did not know Willoughby made any such promise but clarified that the council has no such policy in place.

“Actually, the reverse would be the case that we are trying to aggressively as possible collect the significant amount of arrears of property taxes so that the policy of this council has been to be as aggressive as it can be, because property taxes and to a lesser degree trade license revenue is the lifestream of the City Council,” Bradley said.

He went on to say that promising to write off property taxes would make for a good election pitch, but would not be the hallmark of a responsible leader, given the financial responsibility of the council.

Willougby, who spoke about the tax write offs last week, has been campaigning without the support of Mayor Bradley, who has publicly endorsed candidate Dion Leslie.
