Zone 4 Children’s Summer camp completes 10 years

By BBN Staff: This year, the annual  Zone 4 Benque Viejo Neighborhood Watch Children’s Summer Camp reached its milestone 10th camp.

Captain Samuel Bruce is the leader of Zone 4 neighborhood watch group. It has been in full operation since 2008 with various community efforts through the years.

On August 14th, the children’s summer camp was initiated offering free activities to hundreds of children; including arts & crafts, sports, educational lectures, and implementing community policing programs such as the GREAT program.

The event has always been held at Sam’s community park on Bruce’s property. The children have enough space for all sporting activities and play grounds.

Bruce and  his volunteers; Instructor zone lieutenant  Isela Tesucum, zone lieutenant Ricky Cunil, Paulino Lopez, Leandra Chulin,  Armando Chulin, Garfield Murillo, Rafael Martinez, and chefs Criselda Diaz, Marta Raix, and Juri Del Cid all contributed to the children’s experience.

Special Guests at the event this year included Cpl. Joshua McKoy who is an International GREAT program instructor and commander of the Community Policing Unit; Benque  Deputy Commander of Community Policing WPC Coleman, Pastor Isaiss Melgar, Belmopan K9 Unit and MIT WPC Eden Jones, PC Willam Sanchez, Cpl. Dennson  Longsworth, with an exhibition of a drug Dog recovery demonstration.

The camp also saw invited guest presenters from the Ministry of Health, Emma Gabriel McKoy with a lecture on self esteem and Gemma Catzim speaking about nutritional diets.

Cpl. McKoy engaged the children with the principles of the GREAT PROGRAM, issues of peer pressure, anger management, and educational games.

On Friday, August 18, 2017, the children graduated from the event with a special ceremony.

At the ceremony, the Deputy OC, Inspector Stephanie Grinage from the Benque Viejo sub formation gave words of congratulations to Bruce and his volunteers in keeping the Zone 4 Neighborhood Watch Program active for 10 years and encouraged them to continue forward with the tradition, while building up the morale of the children.
