Leading firefighters complete training

Posted: Thursday, January 11, 2018. 9:44 am CST.

BBN Staff: Minister of Transport and National Emergency Management, with responsibility for the Belize National Fire Service,  Edmond Castro, was the main speaker this morning at a Certificate Presentation Ceremony for Leading Fighters-Fighters (LLF).

Certificates were awarded to 12 firefighters who successfully completed the six-week course from November 6 to December 15, 2017.

The training entailed theory and practical exercises, covering areas such as Effective Report Writing (Fire Incident Data); Incident Command; Fire Control; Size-up; Hazmat (LPG); Fire Hydraulics; Fire Behavior; Fire Investigation; Table-top (managing hazmat incidents) and Live Fire Training Exercise.

In his address to the firefighters, Castro remarked: “I want our National Fire Service, under my command, to be the best run fire service in the region. So, all this training is geared towards achieving this goal – to make you the best team and the best organization in responding to fire and fire-related incidents. I and my ministry fully support you in this initiative, and everything else that is being done to improve and modernize the service, and to equip you with the skills to get the job done in the most professional and effective manner. In terms of equipment, I know we do not have all that we need, not even nearly. For this reason, it is even more important that we train hard to get the most out of what we have. So, let me congratulate you, individually and as a team, for having chosen this difficult but noble profession; and let me thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your continued selfless service to the nation.”

Other speakers at the ceremony included National Fire Chief Ted Smith and Assistant Fire Chief Berisford Matura, Station Manager Orin Smith, as well as three of the outstanding firefighters who successfully completed the course.

The ceremony took place at the Belize National Fire Service Headquarters in Belize City.
