PUP and UDP face off in court over 33 suspected illegal transfers

Posted: Thursday, February 1, 2018. 11:39 am CST.

BBN Staff: Reports to BBN indicate that representatives from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s United Party (PUP) are presently at the San Ignacio’s Magistrate’s Court sorting out how 33 people from the Georgeville and San Antonio villages were transferred into Santa Elena Town, Cayo.

The opposition, PUP is challenging the transfer of addresses which was done, since according to them, the residents do not reside in Santa Elena Town.

This morning, we caught up with Cayo Central PUP standard bearer, Daniel Silva who made a call for a re-registration process since according to him, Belize’s electoral process and voters list has been compromised: “ This is illegal, these people don’t live here. Today we are taking them to court. “

When asked if he believes that the staff of Elections and Boundaries office knew that they were unlawfully transferring people by approving the change of address, Silva replied saying that the staff are aware that the 33 people don’t live in Santa Elena town and still signed off and approved the transfer: “There is collusion from the people at Elections and Boundaries . They know these people don’t live here and they have stated that they live here. We have a problem with our  electoral system where you have collusion from the people in there who are falsifying documents. This is something serious.”

Present at court today was well known teacher, Jeronimo Carillo from San Antonio Village.  Carillo told us that he is objecting to 23 people on the list who reside in San Antonio village and have been transferred to Santa Elena Town. “We are going for a court case for some people from San Antonio who have been falsely registered in Santa Elena. I know these people because they live in San Antonio Village,” he said.

Attorney Arthur Saldivar is representing the Cayo Central PUP Committee. He told us this morning that they are challenging people who were unlawfully transferred from village into the municipality to vote for the municipal elections on March 7, 2018: “This is an unlawful practice because it basically deprives those who live in the municipalities as having their votes be counted as deciding factor in who is going to run the affairs of the municipality.”

BBN has obtained a list of the names being challenged and their addresses.
