Fuel tanker anchored on Belizean waters; Government reportedly unable to pay for it

Posted: Sunday, February 25, 2018. 5:18 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Information reaching BBN is that the fuel tanker “Syrtos” continues to be anchored on Belizean waters.

A source informed our news desk that the owner has refused discharging operations until the government pays for the fuel.

The Syrtos is loaded with almost half a million gallons of diesel and almost 300,000 gallons of Jet fuel.

Yesterday, Belizean media reported on a leaked memo from Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight. In the memo, Waight is telling senior public officers to stop checking their accounts, because the Government of Belize doesn’t have any money.

The leaked document comes at a time where the local media are reporting an imminent shortage of gas, because GOB, cannot make the payment for the resupply.

Some residents have reported to BBN that last night several gas stations in Belize City have begun to ration their fuel inventory.

A shortage in gasoline could carry heavy economic consequences for Belize, as every business in country could be affected by the shortage.
